The CABAL’s regulars meet 2nd and 4th Saturdays from 1 to 9 pm at 1105 Altschul Avenue near Gordon Avenue, Menlo Park. CABAL does frequent installations (alerting the install team being appreciated but not required), Q & A, discussion of applications and tools, and use of Deirdre & Rick’s fast aDSL Internet connection and GNU/Linux servers.

Directions to 1105 Altschul Avenue, Menlo Park

(Note that Altschul Avenue is one-way towards Avy and Sand Hill Road, in our neighbourhood.)

By car: From I-280: Exit eastbound onto Sand Hill Road, going downhill 1.5 mile to turn left (logical north) at the first major intersection, onto Santa Cruz Avenue. After two long blocks at the first traffic light, bear left (still logical north) onto Alameda de las Pulgas. In four blocks (1/8 mile) you will cross Avy Avenue, which has a Chevron station and Starbuck’s. Proceed two more blocks to turn left (logical west) onto Ashton Avenue, climbing up one block to turn left (logical south) onto Altschul Ave. 1105 Altschul is on the right, near the next cross-street (Gordon Ave.).

From US-101: Exit westbound onto Marsh Road, turning left (logical south) when Marsh Road ends after 1 mile, onto Middlefield Road. Go 1/2 mile, past Watkins Ave., Lane Place, Prior Lane, Encinal Ave. (note schoolyard), and Surrey Lane, to turn right (logical west) onto Glenwood Ave. In one mile, Glenwood crosses El Camino Real at a traffic light, becoming Valparaiso Ave.

Proceed 2 miles, one long block past the traffic light at Alameda de las Pulgas (fire station on the corner), to turn left (logical south) onto Altschul Ave. (That intersection lacks street signs, but you’ll see “Sharon Hills Park” on the far-right corner.) Proceed four blocks (1/8 mile) to 1105 Altschul Ave., on your right near the corner of Gordon Avenue. (map)

By CalTrain: Exit at Menlo Park station, then walk 2 miles logical west along Santa Cruz Avenue. Alternatively, call Rick Moen at 650-283-7902, and he’ll come pick you up. After 1.8 miles, you’ll see a graveyard on the left. Just after that, Santa Cruz Avenue turns half-left (south): Ignore that turn, proceeding straight onto Avy Avenue. Proceed five blocks (crossing Alameda de las Pulgas) to turn right (logical north) onto Altschul Avenue. 1105 Altschul will be on your left at the end of the block. (map)

By bus: Unfortunately, SamTrans routes 295 San Mateo – Menlo Park Caltrain Feeder, 83 Sharon Heights – Marsh Manor, and 85 Portola Valley/Woodside/Skylonda, as well as Stanford University’s free Marguerite shuttle bus route M (Menlo Line) run weekdays only, and therefore are no use for these events. However, you can use SamTrans’s weekend service down the El Camino Real corridor, and call Rick Moen at 650-283-7902 for pickup from downtown Menlo Park.

This is a reminder that there will be an installfest today, Fathers’ Day, 10:00 a.m. to 5 pm at a public middle school at Geary and Scott Streets in San Francisco. There is ample free parking. If you are interested in showing up and you have questions, please feel free to call Christian Einfeldt at 415-351-1300. Please also feel free to call Jeff Shippen at 5O5-8O3-3456. Please do not contact the school, as the principal has delegated control over these types of activities to Christian Einfeldt, and the staff will only be confused by phone calls.

It is recommended that you approach the school from the entrance to the parking lot, which is located at the L-shaped intersection of Pierce and O’Farrell. Please do NOT attempt to gain entrance to this installfest by going to the front of the school, as the school is huge, and you will just get lost. Instead, please call Christian Einfeldt or Jeff Shippen at the above numbers on the day of the event to direct you to the Linux lab where the work will be done.

The entrance to the school parking lot is located about 40 meters from the corner of Pierce and O’Farrell, which is an L-shaped intersection. Please enter this search string into your favorite mapping service:

pierce & O’Farrell San Francisco

Agenda:
1) triaging, repairing, and installing Linux on old computers in storage at the school
2) supporting the installation of Linux on old computers brought to the school by newbies.

We have ample monitors, keyboards, and mice to support the installation of Linux on old computers brought in by newbies. We also have lots of distros and screwdrivers; however, we encourage people to bring their own distro collections due to the sheer size of the distro choices availabe. We also encourage people to bring their own screwdrivers, needle nose pliers, and any other tools needed to work on legacy machines.

The computers will be deployed there at the school; or given to kids who attend that school; or will be sent to Mexico, where GNOME Foundation Executive Director Stormy Peters is building a Linux lab at a school:

http://www.stormyscorner.com/2009/01/setting-up-a-computer-lab-in-mexico.html

Summary:

What: installfest
Where: School parking lot at Pierce and O’Farrell
When: Sunday, June 21, from 10:00 am to 5 pm

What:
Linux is a completely free, ‘open source’ operating system that can run on a wide variety of computer hardware. It can act as a web-, file-, print- or game-server, run in a ‘cluster’ of computers to do 3D rendering or other intense math, or sit under your TV and record your favorite shows for later viewing. Many people use it as an inexpensive, stable, virus- and spyware-free alternative to commercial software, such as Microsoft Windows. It can be installed over, or alongside, Windows or Mac OS X.

Members of the community are invited to bring their computers and laptops to this informal workshop, and volunteers from LUGOD will help you install and configure Linux… for FREE!

How:
If you wish to bring in your PC, you must RSVP beforehand to reserve a space. The RSVP form, and lots of useful information about Linux and Installfests, and how to prepare for the event, are accessible on the web at:

http://www.lugod.org/if/

Help!
We’re always looking for volunteers for our workshops. If you’d like to help, or come watch and learn as others are helped, please feel free to drop by. Our “vox-if” mailing list is where we discuss plans and needs for these events, so we encourage you to sign up:

1-9pm
Menlo Park, California
CABAL meeting/installfest at Rick & Deirdre’s House (map)

(Reconstruction of Valparaiso Avenue has finished, as of 2007-04-08. It’s fully usable, again.)

Proceed 2 miles, one long block past the traffic light at Alameda de las Pulgas (fire station on the corner), to turn left (logical south) onto Altschul Ave. (That intersection lacks street signs, but you’ll see “Sharon Hills Park” on the far-right corner.) Proceed four blocks (1/8 mile) to 1105 Altschul Ave., on your right need the corner of Gordon Avenue.

Sat. Nov. 8, 2008
1-9pm
Menlo Park, California
CABAL meeting/installfest at Rick & Deirdre’s House (map)

Tenderloin Computer Help Day
September 27, 2008
9:00 a.m. to 2 p.m.
St. Anthony Foundation, 150 Golden Gate Avenue at Jones

St. Anthony is a clean, well-run facility, and there are friendly guards stationed out on the sidewalk in front of the place. BART and Muni service St. Anthony’s, and there are plenty of paid parking structures nearby.

Notice the emphasis on Free Open Source Software at this event. St. Anthony is really “getting” the importance of Free Open Source Software:
http://www.sfconnect.org/specialevents/viewSpecialEvent.php?_mode=eventDetail&_action=eventDetail&ixSpecialEvent=35

Tenderloin Computer Help Day
September 27, 2008

Network Ministries, St. Anthony Foundation and other Tenderloin agencies strive to increase technology use by offering computer classes and labs. But many Tenderloin residents may have old or obsolete computer equipment and software is often too expensive.

At this event, volunteers will

1. Demonstrate how to use computers and install free open source software;

2. Provide technical support and troubleshooting for existing computers; and

4. Demonstrate how to sign up for email and browse the Internet to find useful information and resources.

You can select one of the teams or you can help out wherever you are needed.

Please consider coming to this event to increase the visibility of Free Open Source Software in the non-profit section in the San Francisco Bay Area!

Untangle & ACCRC have teamed up with LinuxWorld (Aug 5-7) for our second Installfest for Schools. The first ACCRC/Untangle Installfest for Schools in March refurbished 350 Ubuntu computers for schools[1]. This time we’ve gotten a large booth on the expo floor and will have workstations setup for volunteers to refurbish recycled computers with Ubuntu and GnewSense. We particularly need help with the following:

1)Installing Ubuntu and/or gNewSense
2)Hacking older hardware and identifying good/bad components

You can signup for a work station here:

http://www.untangle.com/installfest

Also, if you know of a school in need of computers that’s willing to try GNU/Linux please nominate them here:

http://www.untangle.com/index.php?option=com_collect&task=installfestNominate&Itemid=1426

And if you have an older computer that you want to donate or recycle, please bring it to LinuxWorld. ACCRC will have a collection booth setup and can provide tax deductable receipts. PIII and newer systems will be refurbished with Ubuntu for schools. Older systems will be recycled properly by the ACCRC.

Lastly, we are always looking for help getting the word out. If you want to give the event some love on your blog, Digg, StumbleUpon, Slashdot, or some crazy forum please link to the main installfest page, which is http://www.untangle.com/installfest

Thanks so much for your help!

P.S. The LinuxWorld Expo free if you register before the conference starts here:
