Welcome to the Web site of "Installfest dot Org". This site was re-implemented as a self-service (OpenID enabled) community resource in November 2008.

Announce an Installfest

It’s Easy!

This site used to be edited by hand in a rather tedious process. It has now been re-implemented as a WordPress, open access community blog to encourage everyone to post their installfest announcement here, quickly and easily.

All new users can contribute posts to the site by creating an account here or using an existing OpenID.

Your first post needs to be approved, to try and ensure we never distribute spam. Upon verification of your legitimate Installfest announcement, your access level will be upgraded from “contributor” to “author” and your subsequent Installfest announcements will appear immediately. (Hopefully we’ll come up with a WordPress plugin to do this automatically when any author approves a contributor’s post)

To announce regularly scheduled Installfests, click here

  1. Either:
    1. Create an account here then Log In or
    2. Use an existing OpenID.
  2. You will be presented with the Write Post page to fill out. This has been simplified from the normal WordPress post page for your convenience.
  3. Fill in the Title like: Wednesday, June 28, 2009, 7PM – 10PM: Your Installfest, YourCity, YourState (, Your Country)
  4. Fill in the Page section with your announcement. Be sure to include start and end times, what’s welcome at your Installfest (Linux, BSD, OpenSolaris, etc.), what to bring, and what not to bring. Also remember to list any building requirements like photo ID.
  5. Add any Tags you think are appropriate, like installfests and Your City.
  6. Add a Map. Use Insights to add a Google Maps image. You can add markers and draw paths too. When you are satisfied, click “Add Map” to add the image to your announcement at the current cursor location in the Post text box.

  7. Post your Installfest to the site:
    1. Contributors: Click “Submit for Review”. Your announcement will appear as soon as it has been reviewed by a human, at which point your access level will also be raised to “Author”.
    2. Authors: Click “Publish”. Your announcement will appear immediately.
  8. Published on: click “Edit” and set this to the date and time your installfest begins. This site shows “future” posts to accomodate this. Also remember to use 24 hour time. (ie: 1pm = 13, 2pm =14, etc.)

Not your first announcement here?

Welcome back! You can easily announce an Installfest similar to a previous one by clicking on Posts, or Edit under the Posts section.

Under posts you should see your previously announced installfests, and next to each is a link you can click on called Duplicate, which will open up a new post in the Write Post window, with the contents of your previous Installfest announcement, for quick and easy editing.

Don’t forget to update the date and time, place, map and tags, as appropriate.

Regularly Scheduled Installfests

This site does have some capability of automatically posting your regularly scheduled installfests. Please contact the site administrator to set this up.
