- Custom Intel 3Ghz P4 VIA KM400 chipset, 1GB RAM, 160GB HD. Machine crashed on reboot with over temperature warning. Found dirty CPU cooler and broken cooler retention bracket. After scrounging used parts box we came up with retention bracket and matching used cooler and got the box running again. But no X. Copied xorg.conf.failsafe to xorg.conf and the X desktop came up on reboot. Added a few modules to get Flash for youtube and Internet radio (VLC) going. Client a bit overwhelmed and we suggested using the “help” button (blue circle with ?) as a guide to exploration.
- Dell Power Edge server. Uneventful installation.
- Dell GX150. GUI functional after installing a custom xorg.conf and issuing “killall gnome-panel”
- Dell Inspiron 6400. Update/upgrade uneventful.
- ASUS MCP51 deferred waiting for new cooler
- Intel socket 775 machine deferred also for cooler
- Acer 17.3 laptop – multimedia tweaks
Overall – successful. Curious number of cooler problems. Second biggest hurdle – GUI on older video chipsets. Next event – Software Freedom Day in September.
